Valentine’s Day has many origins. However, the most popular legend says that Valentine’s Day originated with Lupercalia, a Roman festival held in mid-February. It was celebrated during the beginning of spring, with women paired with men through a lottery. It was Pope Gelasius who replace this festival with St. Valentine’s Day. It continued to be celebrated as the day of romance for a long time from about the 14th century.
Another legend says that Saint Valentine was hanged on February 14 as punishment for performing secret marriages to keep husbands from going to war, as they were banned by the Roman Emperor Claudius II.
According to Roman mythology, God of desire, the angel of love, is the son of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and Cupid’s bow and arrow are depicted piercing the heart and casting a love spell. Cupid is also a popular symbol of Valentine’s Day. Therefore, this festival is all about celebrating the feeling of being in love.
